One of the most overlooked expenses of a vacation is transportation. Taxis are not cheap, they sometimes smell, and if you are in a smaller town they can be difficult to locate. You do have other options.
Here are the most common means of transportation when traveling:
Shuttle (you have to schedule in advance)
Public Transportation – tram or bus
Determining which option is going to work best for you starts with determining where you are going to travel to. If you are traveling to a big city it is very likely that you will have plenty of taxi, uber, and public transportation options.
If you are traveling to a more rural area you may be limited to a rental car, calling a taxi, or using Uber.
What is the cheapest option? By far the cheapest option is public transportation. Generally, a one-way pass is going to be $2-5 per person. Many public transportation options will allow you to purchase 24-72 hour, one week, and month passes for unlimited rides. Prices will vary.
An easy way to find out your public transportation options is to use google maps. Click on the ‘transit’ icon and it will show you tram and bus routes that will get you to your destination. It also includes schedules and links to determine the costs. Be aware that hours vary between weekends and rush hour times.
Another option that many travelers overlook is rail, such as Amtrak. This option is much more usable on the east and west cost due to the number of trains and connections/stations.
One example would be from Miami to Jacksonville, FL. For $63 you can take a train and sit back and enjoy the ride. It will take about 2-3 hours longer than driving but you do get to sleep and do some work in a nice comfy chair. Trains usually have much more room than a coach seat on an airplane so you won’t feel cramped on the longer ride. The cheapest nonstop flight between those two cities is $204. That is substantially higher than a $63 train ticket. You have to decide if the time savings is worth the extra $140. If you are traveling with a family this could save you $500 +
Another cool thing about train is that you should have cell service the whole trip so you can talk on the phone, unlike a plane 🙂
My favorite choice is Uber. The reason for this is the ease of use and the price. Uber will generally cost 50% less than a taxi in the same city. The best feature of Uber is that by using the app you can get an estimate of the cost before you order the ride. Once you order the ride you will be able to see the car on a map and know exactly when it is going to arrive. In addition you will have a photo of the driver, their name, their Uber rating, and the vehicle description w/license plate number.
Uber is a CASHLESS service. You setup your payment method on the app and it takes care of the rest. Tipping is not expected so you don’t ever have to worry about having cash on hand or the credit card you added to your account, you just need your phone with you.
Uber offers a sign up bonus of $20 to new users. Follow this link: https://www.uber.com/invite/a7rt6ue
This offer will give you $20 off your first ride. (and give me $20 for referring you)
Some cities will have higher rates than others but Uber is still generally 50% less than taxis, regardless. Here is the breakdown cost of my trip from the Fort Lauderdale airport to the hotel. This ride in a taxi would have been $30 + tip. I used a free coupon which made my total $0, but as you can see it would have been less than $15.00 for a 9 mile/26 minute ride, in a tourist area!
The best part is you don’t have to pay per person with Uber, it is just like a taxi. With public transportation and shuttle services you have to pay per person which may end up costing your family more than an Uber.
