Check your email if you hold an American Express Open credit card (Open cards are business credit cards). I received a bonus spend offer this week for my Business Delta Gold Card. There are also targeted offers being sent out for the Business Starwood SPG credit card. (sadly I didn’t receive that one)
If you were targeted for the Business Delta Gold card offer (click to register), here is what you can expect:
5,000 bonus miles after spending $2,000. That means you will receive a total of 7,000 miles since you will still earn at least one point per dollar spent on the $2,000. The value of those Delta points is somewhere in the range of $90-$140. Some folks don’t find much value in Delta miles but I happen to think they are pretty awesome.
I can fly from Phoenix to Seattle one-way using only 7,000 Delta miles. That same ticket would cost me $138 if I paid cash making those 7,000 miles worth almost two cents per point!
Some folks may find it difficult to spend the $2,000 by Oct 15th, which I completely understand. The last thing you want to do is buy things you don’t need for a free airline ticket. Your best bet is to pay bills like your mortgage, rent, car payment, etc using Plastiq.com. Plastiq charges about 2.5% to pay those bills which means that if you spent all the required $2,000 by paying your bills you’d fork over about $50 in fees. For me it would make sense to pay the $50 in fees since the 7,000 Delta miles worth over $100.
The Starwood SPG bonus offer (click to register) has a higher payout but requires much more spending on your part.
Here are the terms of the offer according to American Express:
“Earn 5,000 Starpoints after you spend $5,000 in qualifying purchases* using your Card, Plus, earn an additional 5,000 Starpoints (for a total of 10,000 bonus Starpoints) after you spend an additional $5,000 (for a total of $10,000) in qualifying purchases on your Card.”
That means if you spend a total of $10,000 you will receive a bonus 10,000 SPG points for a grand total of 20,000 SPG points (you earn 1 point per dollar on your base spend also). The great part about earning 20,000 SPG points is their flexibility to be transferred to 150 different airlines. Starwood gives a 5,000 point bonus when you transfer 20,000 points to a single airline giving you 25,000 airline miles of your choice! If you are targeted for this offer and can swing the $10,000 spend requirement you are going to get a nice chunk of points transferred to almost any airline!
