Southwest kicked off their biannual sale with $49 one-ways beginning on 6/6. It looks like other airlines are following Southwest’s example by pricing-matching on many routes!
$49 flights this fall
Here is what we know with Southwest’s sale, perhaps others:
• You must book by 6/8
• Travel sale dates are from 8/22 – 12/13
• There are some obvious blackout dates around major holidays (September 1, September 4, & November 17-28, 2017)
• It is harder to find $49 flights on Sundays and Fridays
• You aren’t going to find $49 flights coast-to-coast – mainly on shorter flights
Here are some sample $49 flight deals I found on Southwest.com and Google Flights (one-way):

Not sure where you want to go? I like to use Southwest’s map tool to see my $49 flight options

Remember, with Southwest you can cancel your “cash” flight at anytime and receive a refund as future flight credit. For the other airlines, you can cancel within 24 hours of booking for a FULL refund to your method of payment. When using points to book on Southwest, these same flights for $49 are only 2,300 points + $5.60, I’d definitely lock-in some dates and pricing while things are cheap. (Essentially you can hold flights since cancelling and refunding your Southwest points is instantaneous)
International flights are on sale also, Southwest is offering a one-way from Los Angeles, Oakland and Houston to Mexican resort cities starting at $104 one-way. The return flight from Mexico will be tad more expensive due to customs/departure fees. I found round-trips from Los Angeles to Puerto Vallarta for just $224 on Southwest, a great deal indeed.
